The eighth edition of the East Africa Badmiton Challenge has finally got underway at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The tournament has attracted a record number of participants across the region stretching to the Cook Islands.

Speaking to the press, Simon Mugabi, the CEO Uganda Badmiton Association said the turn up is tremedous and the prize money has been improved.

“This time we have got close to 2000 participants. It is very intresting to have that number in this year’s East Africa Badmiton tournament,” Mugabi said.

“I am glad that the prize money has been improved from UGX 8,000,000 to UGX 11,000,000 which gives participants a reason to give their all in this particular tournament,” he added.

According to Mahad Twaha, an official from the Mandela Group of companies confirmed that they have offered 125 trophies for participants across all categories.

“We (Mandela Group of Companies) have continued to support sport in the country. Today we have started a tournament that will continue to shape and improve badmitton talents in the country,” he stated.

“Our support to Badmiton in part of our continued strategy of engaging with the community. This is our eigth year and I highly believe that we are with them for the coming years,” he added.

The tournament will climax on Sunday, October 19 after action running through the four days.
